Geraldine Gess passed away on November 20, 2009 at Richland Gardens at the age of 100. She had resided in Kennewick for the past 63 years. Geraldine (Jerry) was born on June 13, 1909, in Roswell, New Mexico, to Margaret E. and Robert J. Kretchmar.
As a young girl she lived in Oklahoma City, OK, and Amarillo, TX. She attended West Texas State College and the University of Oklahoma. As a young woman she worked in Amarillo and Providence, Rhode Island, as a legal secretary. While in Providence she worked in the Capitol for the attorney appointed by Governor Vanderbilt to the position of Director of Business Regulations.
She returned to Amarillo in 1941 and met Thomas B. Gess a year later. They married in July of 1943 in San Antonio, TX, where he was stationed with the Army Air Corps. After the war was over they settled in Kennewick in 1946. From the time she moved here, Jerry was active in many organizations. She was active in Toastmistresses, Community Concerts, the Mid-Columbia Symphony Guild, Camp Fire Girls, and P.E.O., a philanthropic education organization for women. She and her husband, Tom, were charter members of the First Presbyterian Church in Kennewick. They were also charter members of the Tri-City Country Club where they had numerous friends and enjoyed golf for many years. Jerry and Tom loved to travel and enjoyed many trips to Europe and throughout the United States for years.
Jerry was predeceased by her husband Tom in 2000. She is survived by her daughter, Susann Mendoza (Dr. Luis), of Pleasant Valley, New York, and her granddaughter, Katherine Manteca, of Seattle. She is also survived by her cousin, Ann Orth, of Nashville, Tennessee, her niece, Patricia Goins, of Scotia, New York, and many great and great-great nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Celebration of Life is planned for 2:00 p.m. April 10, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church in Kennewick.
