George Joseph Conway

George Joseph "Joe" Conway was born on December 21, 1923 in the Bronx, New York. He died on July 28, 2010 in Kennewick, Washington. He was the son of Bertrand Lewis Conway and Margaret O'Brien. He was preceded in death by his brother Bertrand and his sisters Irene and Grace.

George was a 21-year veteran of the United States Navy. He was known as a "Sea Going Sailor" and a "Deep Water Sailor". He sailed the oceans of the world, the seven seas, around the horn of Africa, the Cape of Good Hope, South America, both canals, the Great Lakes, and the Hudson and Columbia rivers.

He served on the biggest ships all the way down to the smallest: battleship, cruisers, destroyers, amphibious ships, and a 136 foot wooden minesweeper.

He served in the North Atlantic before WWII was declared, and in all the major campaigns in the South Pacific, from Gaudalcanal to the surrender and occupation of Japan, Tokyo Bay and the Inland Sea. He also participated in the Chinese Revolution on the side of our ally Chang Kai Shek and trained pilots for the Berlin Airlift. He also served in the Korean War, Beirut, Lebanon, Quemoy, Matsu, and the Cold War.

After retiring from the Navy in 1961, George worked for American Bosch Arma Corp., and at the same time he obtained his stockbrokers license and his life insurance license. He worked as a stockbroker until retirement in 1985.

He is survived by his first wife, Teresa, and their children, Brian, Michael, Barry and Eileen and grandchildren. He is also survived by his second wife, Leslie, and their sons "Joey" George Joseph and Kevin James.
